What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and has been practised for 2,000 years in China and other far eastern countries. Western or medical acupuncture is a more recent development practised predominantly by doctors and physiotherapists which uses a limited range of acupuncture techniques on the basis of a western medical diagnosis.
It is a safe and effective form of treatment and is applicable for people of all ages, who present with a wide range of different conditions. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. The flow of qi can be disturbed by many factors, physical, mental and emotional: anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help to restore its natural balance Acupuncture is used by Physiotherapists, against a background of sound research and evidence, as a means of enhancing pain modulation via the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord to produce NATURAL pain relieving chemicals, such as endorphins; melatonin to promote sleep, serotonin to promote well being, along with others.
These assist the body's healing process and offer pain relief as a precursor for other manual or exercise therapy Some of the conditions treatable by Acupuncture:
Circulatory: cold extremities, cramping, Raynuads disease Digestive: indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation Emotional: anxiety states, excessive stress, depression and insomnia Fatigue: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, M.E., Glandular Fever Gynaecological: cystitis, menstrual irregularities, P.M.S.
